As Ayako continues to draw key scenes in my books, I have discovered a hidden benefit to this project: occasionally, an illustration can help polish the original text upon which it is based.
A specific example of this can be seen in the picture of Terry piloting a stolen airplane during the escape from New Haven. In the original text, Terry had operated the throttles with her hook, which is on her left hand. It was only after I saw the illustration that it occurred to me that the throttles would be to Terry’s right.
Such mistakes were fortunately few and far between, but there were several cases where becoming more visually aware of certain scenes allowed me to make improvements to the text that wouldn’t have occurred to me otherwise.
All in all, a very worthwhile venture.
And with the completion of the internal artwork for The Quest, the total number of illustrations for the full pentalogy has now passed the 3-digit mark. More than 100 images and still one more book to go.
And yet I can’t help but feel that there is a little too much gap between the pictures across the series. Once the artwork for Guardian Angel is completed so that all five books are illustrated, I intend to revisit each book in turn to add just a few more pictures.
For now, in addition to the full-color character illustrations, there are 28 black and white images in The Quest.
